Modern Adventures | 72 Hours In Mighigan

Written By: Tyler

Welcome to the first installment of Modern Adventures.

At Cowboys and Astronauts, we believe the best memories aren't just about where you go, but how you feel when you get there. We’re kicking things off with a recent weekend escape to Michigan, chasing the first signs of thaw and finding the perfect layers for a "not-quite-spring" getaway.

Our mission? Get out of the city, support our neighbors, and find a little space to breathe. Joining me for the trek were Brian, and our best friends Steve and Hayden.

The Stay: The Tire House

We hunkered down at  The Tire House, an incredible architectural gem in Fennville that actually won the Airbnb OMG! Contest. It’s a one-of-a-kind sustainable retreat built from 1,000 recycled tires found right on the 22-acre property. It’s "in the middle of nowhere" in the best way possible; secluded, wooded, and relaxing!

The first order of business upon arrival? I immediately checked to make sure the hot tub was hot! After we all took a minute to soak in the quiet scenery of the surrounding forest, straight to the water we went.

Pro Tip: Look for rentals with a great kitchen, we spent Saturday morning making a "Kid at Heart" classic breakfast.

The Run-Down: Antiques, Drag, and Espresso Martinis

Friday: The Slow Arrival

The four of us loaded up the car on Friday for a three-day adventure to relax and recharge. On the drive over, we stopped at a few vintage and antique malls. We managed to snag a few pieces for our personal collections and you might even see a few of these treasures styled in the shop this fall.

Dinner was at Salt of the Earth in Fennville. It was amazing! (If you go, ask for Kristi—she’s the best). We ended the night with a quick stop at the local grocery store for essentials before heading back to the house for a soak under the stars.

Saturday: Local Love

Breakfast was a nostalgia trip: freezer waffles, eggs, and fruit, topped with local Michigan syrup we picked up on the way at Farmette. We even used our Blue Henry Bloody Mary Salt to season the eggs (and the drinks, naturally).

Then, it was into Saugatuck and Holland to do some shopping! Supporting fellow small businesses is the heart of what we do, and we had to visit shops our customers always rave about:

  • Sunday Drive: The boutique offers a thoughtfully curated assortment of men’s apparel, accessories and skincare products designed for those that appreciate effortless sophistication and everyday luxury.

  • Kindel & Company: The offerings include men’s clothing and accessories, grooming essentials, home décor, furniture, and distinctive timepieces and jewelry for both men and women. As a visual person, I loved seeing how they merchandised some of our favorite brands.

  • Cherry Republic: We couldn't leave without some sweet treats.

We spent the afternoon back at the house with espresso martinis in the hot tub, catching up on Drag Race on the iPad. We capped the night with a stunning dinner at Coast 236, and because no trip to Saugatuck is complete without it, we ended the night with a drag show at The Dunes Resort.

The Adventure Uniform (Shop the Trip)

Michigan weather in March is... unpredictable. Here’s what made the cut from our latest arrivals to keep us comfortable from the car ride to the "Dunes" dance floor:

  • The Travel Companion: Bedi Studios Weekender. Sustainably made and incredibly durable, this bag held everything we needed for the 3-day trek—from my laptop to extra layers.

  • The Hot Tub Essential: HOM Micro Swim Briefs. A new addition to the shop this season. They offer a sleek, modern fit that’s perfect for a private soak at the Tire House.

  • The Layering Heroes: We lived in pieces from Les Deux, Marine Layer, and Far Afield. These brands are the masters of the "transition" outfit—think soft textures from Marine Layer paired with the refined, European aesthetic of Les Deux.

  • The Grooming Kit: Malin & Goetz Travel Essentials. Just because you’re in the middle of nowhere doesn't mean you skip the routine. Their grapefruit cleanser and rum body wash are weekend staples.
